Read every market as a settlement contract

New Zealand availability: since 28 June 2025, TAB NZ, including Betcha, is the only provider permitted to offer online sports and racing betting to people in New Zealand. International brands mentioned here are comparison records, not NZ signup recommendations. DIA explains the restriction.

Betting odds show the price of a selection; the betting market defines what must happen for that selection to win. Read both together, including the covered period and rules for draws, abandoned events or non-participating players. Two selections with the same team name can represent different bets. Before considering price, identify whether the result includes extra time, what happens on a draw and whether a player must start. All numerical examples here are hypothetical educational calculations, not current offers.

A six-field check before a selection reaches the slip

  1. Identify the sport, competition, fixture and start date.
  2. Read the exact market, such as match result, team total or qualification.
  3. Confirm the scoring period: full match, first half, quarter, set, innings or remaining play.
  4. Read draw, overtime, participation and abandonment rules.
  5. Calculate total stake, return and potential loss.
  6. Check the accepted receipt against those details and save it.

Match winners, head-to-head and three-way results

Two selections do not guarantee a refund on a draw

Head-to-head commonly offers two competitors, but its treatment of a tie depends on the sport and market. A draw might lead to a refund, a reduced dead-heat return or another specified outcome. Never infer the rule simply because no draw button appears. In a three-way football market, 1 means the first-listed team, X means draw and 2 means the second-listed team; the two team bets lose if the relevant period ends level.

Double chance, draw no bet and qualification

Double chance combines two of the three match-result outcomes into one selection, normally at a shorter price. Draw no bet normally refunds a drawn result under its stated terms. Qualification asks which team advances and may therefore include extra time or penalties. Hypothetically, a 1–1 match followed by a shootout can settle the regulation-time market as a draw while producing a winning qualification bet. None of these outcomes contradict each other.

What is a handicap bet? Adjust the score first

Half-point and whole-point lines

A hypothetical rugby selection at −6.5 needs its team to win by at least seven points. A +6.5 selection wins if its team wins or loses by six or fewer. The half-point prevents an exact tie on an integer score. At −6, a six-point win lands exactly on the line; whether that is a push or a separate handicap-draw result depends on the two-way or three-way structure. Read the market rather than assuming every handicap behaves the same.

Asian handicap explained: quarter-goal lines

A quarter line divides a stake across adjacent half and whole lines. Hypothetically, NZ$20 on −0.25 at 2.00 splits into NZ$10 at 0 and NZ$10 at −0.5. If the match is drawn, the 0 portion refunds NZ$10 and the −0.5 portion loses, leaving a NZ$10 net loss. A win returns NZ$40 in total; a defeat loses NZ$20. At +0.25, a draw instead wins the +0.5 half and refunds the 0 half. This explains half-wins and half-losses without treating them as settlement mistakes.

Over-under betting, team totals and scoring markets

Over and under refer to a number, not a winner

A hypothetical over 44.5 total in rugby wins at 45 combined points or more, regardless of which team wins. A 24–20 final score totals 44 and loses that over bet. A whole-number total can finish exactly on its line, requiring the published push rule. A team total counts one team's score; a match total counts both. A second-half market counts only its defined period, while an in-play full-match total usually includes points already scored unless the label says otherwise.

Both teams to score, correct score and winning margin

Both teams to score concerns whether each side scores within the covered period. It is different from over 2.5 goals: a 3–0 result wins the over and loses BTTS Yes. Correct score requires an exact result and therefore has many possible losing outcomes. Winning-margin bands ask for a range rather than an exact score. Check inclusive endpoints and whether a draw has its own band.

Player props, corners, cards and special events

Participation and the official statistic decide settlement

An anytime scorer, first scorer and player shots selection can have different participation rules. Check whether a substitute counts, whether a starter must appear and how own goals are handled. Cards and corners markets need their own definitions: a team's on-screen count is not necessarily the settlement statistic. Some markets concern awarded events and others completed events. An official correction can matter, so identify the result source and settlement timing.

Sport-specific questions to ask

For cricket runs and wickets, check minimum participation and reduced-overs rules. For basketball points, rebounds and assists, check overtime and official data treatment. For tennis games or sets, read retirement provisions rather than extending the match-winner rule to every market. For esports, distinguish a map winner from a series winner and check substitutions or format changes. Small markets can be harder to assess because the available evidence is thinner, not because they automatically offer better value.

Singles, multis and same-game builders

Independent-leg multiplication and its limits

A hypothetical NZ$10 two-leg multi at 1.80 and 2.00 has combined odds of 3.60 and a NZ$36 return if both legs win. One losing leg normally defeats the multi. A voided leg may be reduced to odds of 1.00 under the applicable rules, but promotional and builder products can work differently. Read the ticket's terms before predicting the revised payout.

Correlation changes a builder's price

A team win and its leading scorer's goal are related outcomes. Their probabilities cannot automatically be multiplied as though independent. Use the offered builder price and check how one void leg affects the whole ticket. A large potential payout is accompanied by more ways to lose. Even five independent 70% selections all win only 0.7 to the fifth power, or about 16.8%, under that simplified assumption.

System bets and total ticket cost

A three-selection system containing every possible double has three separate doubles. At NZ$5 per double the total cost is NZ$15. Some combinations can return money while the overall ticket still loses. Work from total stakes and total returns when evaluating the result; counting only winning components hides the loss on the other combinations.

Outrights, each-way bets and racing distinctions

Futures and tied places

An outright selects a tournament or season outcome rather than one fixture. Funds can remain committed for a long period. Read withdrawal, non-participation and dead-heat rules before choosing a player or team. In a simplified two-way dead-heat example, a NZ$10 stake at 4.00 with half the stake settled as a winner returns NZ$20 rather than NZ$40. Actual place availability and ties determine the calculation.

Each-way is two wagers

A hypothetical NZ$5 each-way bet costs NZ$10: NZ$5 win plus NZ$5 place. With win odds of 9.00 and place terms of one-quarter of the fractional win odds, place odds are 3.00. A win would return NZ$45 plus NZ$15; a place without a win returns only NZ$15. Confirm the number of places, deductions and non-runner rules. Pool betting dividends are determined differently from fixed odds, so a displayed estimate is not necessarily a locked return.

A practical settlement audit

Resolve interruptions in the right order

  1. Locate the accepted ticket and any market-specific conditions.
  2. Check whether the event was postponed, abandoned or completed.
  3. Read the relevant sport's rescheduling and minimum-play provisions.
  4. Determine whether your particular market was already decided.
  5. Calculate the expected return, including any void leg or reduction.
  6. Ask support to identify the governing rule if the figures differ.

A cancelled fixture does not justify assuming all bets across all sports receive the same treatment. A completed first-half market and an undecided full-match market can have different outcomes. Preserve the rule version and ticket rather than relying on a generic search answer.

How do betting odds work? Decimal, fractional and American

Decimal, fractional and American prices

Decimal odds of 2.50, fractional odds of 3/2 and American odds of +150 describe the same hypothetical price: NZ$10 returns NZ$25 on a winning cash wager. Decimal odds include the stake; fractional odds describe profit relative to stake. Negative American odds describe the stake needed to win 100 units: −200 is decimal 1.50. An American price with a minus sign is not a negative handicap. Market structure and price format are separate fields.

Implied probability is not a forecast

Divide one by decimal odds to obtain implied probability. At 2.50 that is 40%, before considering the bookmaker's margin. Add the implied probabilities of every mutually exclusive outcome to inspect the overround. Do not add overlapping double-chance selections as though they partition all possibilities. A probability calculation helps you understand a price; it does not establish how likely a sporting event really is.

Use lineup records to practise comparison, not to infer availability

Compare labels across Gambiva, Rooster.bet, 22bet, BetLabel and Ivibet

These names appear in our international lineup. A useful paper exercise is to create blank columns for event, selection, period, overtime, price and void rule. If a record only says “bet builder” or “many markets”, mark the missing fields unknown. Do not fill them from another operator's policy. No current odds, market inventory or NZ eligibility for these brands is verified by this exercise. For the wider legal context see sports betting in NZ; for moving prices see in-play betting.

For an actual wager, use the market wording and the applicable sport section of TAB's published racing and sports rules, then check the current version linked from your account. The linked document is dated October 2024; examples below explain principles and do not replace current terms.

Betting is paid entertainment with a risk of losing the entire stake. Set money and time limits before a session; do not borrow or increase stakes to recover losses. For confidential NZ support, call 0800 654 655, text 8006 or visit Safer Gambling Aotearoa.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a match winner and a handicap?
A match-winner bet concerns the winning side under its stated period. A handicap adds or subtracts a specified number before deciding the betting result.
Does a two-way market always refund a draw?
No. Draw handling depends on the sport and market. Check whether the rule specifies a refund, dead-heat reduction or another treatment.
What does a quarter handicap do?
It splits the stake equally across adjacent whole and half lines. This can produce a half-win or half-loss as well as a full win or loss.
How much does NZ$5 each way cost?
Normally NZ$10: NZ$5 on the win part and NZ$5 on the place part. Place terms and deductions determine the actual return.
